01 THE TAKEAWAY
The one-line summary
Microsoft has officially added Duo support. That is different from confirming the two-pane inbox Apple previewed. The material reviewed for this feature does not yet confirm that the inbox-and-message layout has shipped.
Think of it this way: on a slab phone, reading email is like reading a newspaper folded to a single column — you keep unfolding and refolding. The Duo is supposed to lay the paper flat on the table: index on the left, article on the right. Today, Outlook gives you a bigger sheet of paper. The flat-open layout is still coming.
02 AVAILABLE TODAY
What you get today (verified)
- Official Duo support shipped on launch day. Microsoft's October 23 release notes for Outlook iOS 5.2641.0 describe Duo support, side-by-side multitasking, and smoother layout resizing when orientation or window size changes.
- A full-screen layout is reported. FitsDuo's independent build analysis lists 5.2641.0 and 5.2642.0 as using the iOS 27.1 SDK and Duo APIs, with no letterboxing. This is third-party analysis, not a DuoReady hands-on test.
- Real split-screen works: Outlook can sit side by side with another app (calendar, Teams, notes) — on a slab iPhone this simply isn't possible.
03 STILL TO COME
What still needs confirmation
- The two-pane inbox is not yet confirmed. Apple's Newsroom (October 22) describes what's coming: "In the coming weeks, Microsoft Word and Outlook will roll out a desktop-class experience… Outlook's inbox next to a full message." As of October 29, the reviewed sources do not confirm this layout has shipped. The October 26 update (5.2642.0) mentions only "performance improvements and bug fixes."
- You can't discover Duo support from the App Store. Neither update's App Store notes mention the Duo at all; the clearest first-party release-note record is Microsoft's developer release-notes page.
- Calendar, compose, and half-fold behavior are undocumented. The supplied research did not locate verified owner footage or an official Outlook-on-Duo screenshot. We score what is proven, not what is previewed.
04 SIDE BY SIDE
Slab vs. Duo, honestly
| — | Slab iPhone | iPhone Duo today | iPhone Duo, coming weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading mail | One column: list → tap → full message → back | Same flow, on a much bigger canvas; second app alongside | Inbox + full message side by side (Apple's preview) |
| Multitasking | One app at a time | Two apps side by side | Same, plus the in-app two-pane |
05 THE VERDICT
Our verdict
3/5 — a real, official, partial adaptation. The foundation is genuinely there (launch-day support is documented), but the defining Duo experience for a mail app is the two-pane inbox, and that remains unconfirmed in the evidence reviewed here. When a build newer than 5.2642.0 ships the two-pane layout and evidence confirms it, we will re-check the evidence and update this page — that's the deal with every DuoReady featured review.
What to watch: the next Outlook iOS release notes. If the words "two-pane" or "inbox" appear next to "iPhone Duo," the second half of this story lands.
